UKBMix 086 // Trends & Boylan

The formidable duo & 2 quarters of the Legion collective, lay down a big, bad & heavy 86th instalment of our UKBMix series

Up next in our UKBMix series is none other than the formidable production & DJ duo, Trends & Boylan.

Over the years, the Oxford & London-based pair have cemented their names within the elite of Grime through a multitude of heavy releases on labels such Slimzos Recordings and Oil Gang, on which they dropped their huge 2016 banger Norman Bates.

In 2018 they released their debut album Bedlam to high acclaim on Trend’s own Mean Streets label, this was then followed by Boylan’s own solo debut album 2 Hrs Sleep in 2019 on Nomine Sound.

2021 has seen the duo now join forces with label friends and fellow Grime stalwarts, D.O.K & P Jam to form Legion, a collective that have already taken the underground by storm with their incredible productions and their debut EP We Are Many on J:Kenzo’s label, Artikal Music.

When it came to asking the guys to join the UKBMix ranks, it was a no brainer for us and we are delighted to present the 86th instalment, a big, bad and heavy deep dive into bass-heavy Grime, ‘140’ and breaks, built by the one and only Trends & Boylan.

Biggest influence on your music?

Trends: I listen to a lot of genres but main influences growing up were Reggae, Dancehall, Jungle, Drum & Bass, House & Garage…way to many producers to mention cause I don’t just have one

Boylan: My main influence when starting out was jungle and D&B but at this stage you can hear elements of all types of UK Bass Music in the tracks I make

Last track you listened to?

T: Last track I listened to was a fresh Legion dub. Can’t stop playing it.

B: Nomine sent over the next release on his label by Saraphim, very cool EP

What track do you wish you’d made?

T: Bad Company – The Pulse. That tune will always be my ultimate percy. The intro, the riff, the bass, the drums and how it changed the game. Absolute classic!!

B: Q Project – Champion Sound

Your dream collab would be with?

T: Well I always thought what if Boylan, P Jam, D.O.K and myself got in to the studio and created something…it happened and now we are Legion!

Favourite piece of music kit?

T: There is quite a few but Alchemy and Omnisphere are ones I like to make crazy sounds in

B: Gotta be Logic really

Last album you listened to start to finish?

T: Last album I listened to was Ghetts – Conflict Of Interest. Too cold!!

B: Probably Flavas on Lean Streets

Favourite record label?

T: This is a hard one and I can’t choose one but loving the stuff Beatcamp, Artikal Music and
Sector 7 Sounds are putting out right now. There is definitely more!

B: There’s loads of labels I love but I’m gonna have to shout out Oil Gang on this one. Sick tunes, sick design, sick label

Favourite crisps?

T: This is a very random question but my all time favourite, Beef & Onion Walkers, are discontinued right now so the next best thing that comes close is the marmite flavour ones!

B: Kettle chips I reckon, I’m down with all the flavours
