Following the release of Kamran’s acclaimed Transmission EP last month, Boardgame James’ London-based label 1000 Doors keep up the momentum with news of their fifth release, Spirit Loops Vol 1 from UK producer Shaaytan aka Mokona.
Inspired by square waves and Playstations, the 4 track EP inventively pays homage to the sound of golden era Grime and video game soundtracks, blending production values set by the likes of Wiley & Dizzee Rascal with the delicate nostalgia of RPG classics such as Final Fantasy, the result is Shaytaan’s original and utterly immersive sound.
The EP is also as impressive in its balance as it is with it’s style, with opening track Twin Wield Dual Style ripping out the speakers with it’s classic sounding percussion & highly emotional Ruff Sqwad-esque wailing synth, this then set against the toned down and almost ethereal Magma Hills, with it’s chandelier sonics and extraterrestrial like low-end seemingly transporting the listener to different realms.
It’s an undeniably wicked piece of work and truly adds to the 1000 Doors aesthetic, an imprint continuing in its mission to explore the world of Grime and beyond.
