Sydney grime collective Iron Gate Sound have been a mainstay in the cities reggae/dancehall scene since 2012 and their latest EP, ‘Different Hours’ is out now on their own imprint Iron Gate Records.
‘Different Hours’ features collaborations with vocalists Chiedu Oraka, RTKAL and Jamaican dub poet Michael St. George, as well as UK rapper Juiceman. The EP opens with ‘What You Know’, a hard hitting instrumental featuring warm synths and bouncy drum patterns. The last track off the EP ‘Truth a Truth’ is a poignant track which explores the ideas of truth, trust and kindness through Michael St. George’s emotive and controversial lyrics. A moody and minimal beat compliments his conscious lyrics, making it a powerful and memorable track to finish the EP.
Working with dub, reggae, dancehall and grime artists from Jamaica and Europe, Iron Gate Records has always maintained a connection to roots even as it has sought to develop, reinterpret and innovate new sounds. It’s great to see them continue this trend with this EP. Support Iron Gate Sound by buying this release from their bandcamp, and be sure to follow them on their Spotify page.
